Character Name: Cress
Character Canon: Tales of Phantasia
History: ( the tales wiki is still better than the smt wiki )
AU History:
Cress still lives with his parents, rather than them being dead. Cress’s mother is very sick and has been since his childhood, so he stays and takes care of her. His father, a veteran of the Rangers and a Pokemon Trainer instructor, would like Cress to be a good battler but he’d much rather keep at home with his mother. His father is a master of Steel Type Pokemon, therefore there’s lots of Honedges in their house all the time and Cress is kind of overwhelmed by all of that. His parents took in Chester and Ami Barklight when their parents died, when he and Chester were about twelve years old. They were best friends long before that and it only solidified their bond. When he was about fifteen, his father pushed him to leave the house more and ...well, get a job. Cress worked hard and joined the Sword of the Saviors as he felt they were the most just branch of the city’s developments. This mirror’s Chester’s involvement in the Rangers and both think the other isn’t doing what’s right.
Canon Personality:
Again, so much is explain about Cress’s character in those first couple minutes. When the game begins with start with Cress greeting his father good morning, they seem to have a healthy relationship. He tells his son that tonight they will talk about the pendent he received, which is foreshadowing all in it's own. This sets not only the player, but Cress to know that something is up or at least special about his pendent. Next we have a pacifically programed character NPC named Tornix, he mentions to Cress after he tells his father that Chester and him will be out hunting for the day that he's "always running off to the woods to play," and should spend more time training with his father. Cress is a swordsmen and yes they are not going off to play, this is a mission for food, but in the eyes of the characters within the game and what should be cautiously told to the player is that Cress isn't what everyone expect him to be.
Chester is another important character to Cress's development that also is in the beginning of the story. He's Cress's best friend and comrade, quick to speak up and assure Cress's mother they will be safe, quick to deem they must return to his house before venturing out to give his little sister a snack, quick to give the order over which animal they will be hunting. Much like to comment Tornix said we can see that Cress can take criticism and handle taking direction. I feel this is what makes him more passive comparative to other Tales heroes, stubborn in different ways other than the blatant "I'M NOT WRONG, I'M NEVER WRONG, YOU CAN'T TELL ME WHAT TO DO!!" way.
After their home town is quickly attack in that typical Japanese rolyplaying game fashion Cress is stopped by his dying mother and told to keep his pendent safe. Because of earlier foreshadowing it's easy to connect the two, player and character wise. Suddenly, Cress feels this sudden self-guilt, he rushes to find Chester in his home bent over the corpse of his dead sister. As for my translation (SNES DeJap) lines are exchanged between Cress and Chester that show off that guilt Cress is feeling. He claims it's not safe to say here and they should both leave for his uncles house, Chester refuses and claims he is going to to stay behind despite the danger. The friends exchange their goodbyes and Cress is left to be with only this thoughts. Unlike Chester, Cress forces himself to move on. This isn't out of stubbornness but more so determination. He doesn't want to be the cause of his best friends death so he sets off on his journey.
Cress keeps up this personality though most of the game, that whole "we'll find a way" leadership expressed it almost every single thing they get themselves into. Unlike real life, this pulls through for him in most situations. However, we can find that Cress isn't perfect and he hadn't been able to grow around people like his father and Chester that overshine him in small village of Toltus. Much like a coming of age story it seems a student nor a hunter was what Cress was meant to become, instead he was bound to be a hero. Much of this is expressed through his ability to feel guilt but overcome it. Just like how he left Chester, his owly surviving friend, this mother and fathers bodies, his home and everything he called home at this point, he doesn't show weakness -- Cress moves on.
Another quick mention of Cress's apparent relationship with his father and perhaps how spectators interpreted it. Cress may be a bit less inclined to train under his father, not that he hadn't practiced at all. In the future, the new master of the sword school who's taken over for Cress's father in Miguel Town states that he's not sure who might take over the school after he's gone. They seem to have forgotten all about Miquel having a son at all, leaving the impression (to me) that he may not have been as involved to those his father knew and knew Cress publically.
This doesn’t mean that Cress doesn’t want vengeance. He’s driven though, not by maddening revenge for his parents (a mirror to Chester’s own feelings perhaps,) but instead a massive desire to do good. If he hadn’t been personally affected by Dhaos’s rage, it would have done him some good to join the fight anyway. He’s unsure, but he’s aware of what he has to do. Dhaos is endangering what he holds dear, regardless of lives lost already. He’s very determined in this way, which drives him even when he’s hesitant at first. His friendship with Mint proves this. He’s trapped in a gross dungeon when he meets her, and he sees her mother dead in the cell across from Mint’s own. He simply gives Mint her unicorn earring and tugs her to continue on. He refuses to let her see her mother’s ravaged, broken body. He’s already seen how Chester looked when he saw his dead sister, so he doesn’t want that to happen to Mint either. She’ll have to know eventually, but he needs her to hold on and get out of the dungeon before she breaks down. And when she does, he comforts her.
Cress keeps the party’s spirit up in a way, encouraging everyone around him even when he may be confused. Though this is usually reserved for a supporting character, Cress takes the role on all by himself. Perhaps because he saw his mother suffer all those years. Cress also keeps spirits up by joking around and making puns with the party (Viva Tales of is canon, right,) even if no one likes them. He’s silly, very much still a child, underneath the weight the world has pushed onto him. He humors people as well, taking Arche’s come ons in stride and only rolling his eyes or playfully trying to get Chester and Arche to get along. It seems like he’s always played second string to Chester’s more brash actions before everything was set into motion, so he falls into the supporting role more often than the leader until it really counts for him to take charge. He’s only determined to do good in the world.
*Notes: My most respect playthrough of this game was the SNES DeJap translations. I've played the offical about ten years ago over GBA, I've never played Absolute Zero or Phantasia Production's PSX fantranstions nor any of the original Japanese. Some of this informations was taken from Viva Tales of whether considered canon or not for I've never seen the PSX skits to confirm.
AU Deviation: Cress hasn’t lost his parents, so he’s a bit less driven to fight for justice. While his mother is sick, Cress knows he can’t stray too far from home. He’s also not the “chosen protag!” of Union so he’s not under the weight of the world crashing down on his shoulders. Mostly, Cress is just a normal kid, being pressured to do well by his father. He still has his best friend, Chester Barklight, and has seen the crushing blow it was to lose his little sister Ami, so he’s starting to be less naive about the world.
Canon Abilities: Cress can fight with a variety of swords, axes, and spears, along with dodging and blocking with a shield. He also has mastery over ARTS, some of those include attacks like Demon Fang, Lightning Tiger Blade, Rising Phoenix, Void Tempest, and Beast ( Just remember kids, Cress did it first. )
Enlightened Abilities: Mastery of Training
Cress is a Fire/Electric Type Enlightened. As of right now, he hasn’t awoken to many of his powers. He does have a habit of accidentally shocking other people with static when he touches them, and steaming a little when he blushes/gets flustered. So far this Enlightened business is nothing but trouble! Eventually, I’d like Cress to be able to infuse his sword with fire and lightning attacks like in canon, along with creating shields with the elements as well. Probably his most important skill would be Lionheart (Shinxheart?) in the far flung future, where he’d be able to engulf himself in flames looking like a lion’s head and ramming into the enemies. Like Volt Tackle….. but with, you know, fire.
Starter Pokémon: His father’s oldest Pokemon, an Aegislash that he used during his time in the Rangers is the mother of Cress’s Honedge, Gungnir.
Notes/Special Considerations: Cress will be in the Sword of Savior, but he probably doesn’t know much about their weird military police style man hunts just yet.

“Uhm… huh, I’m not too sure.” Cress scratches his head, obviously a little nervous about this whole “interview” thing. He’s just a simple guy! Why’d they stop him on the street. “I mean, I guess it makes sense that everyone has a place here, right? I’m still kind of young but I think where I’m at is okay… Still, it might not be where I’m at in twenty years! That’s a long time.”
“I’d do anything!” He puts on a determined face finally, not looking so unsure any longer. “I’m definitely not gonna leave them there. Even if it gets us both into trouble.” Cress shakes his head, “nope, I’ll find them! And… even if we both get lost, at least we’d be together right?” The boy finally grins, “that’s always better than being alone.”
“It’s pretty important right?” He was in the Swords of the Savior, he couldn’t just say it wasn’t, even if he hadn’t joined for that kind of thing. “My mom… haha, she told me those stories all the time growing up, you know? I really liked them. They give our people… hope, I guess? That’s really important. I think they’re true, but I know some people don’t. If they’re right, the story is still important! It keeps us all together.”
Cress thinks about this one a moment, his Honedge perking up at the mention and prodding him. “O-ow, hey… I don’t know, I guess. Just whatever one likes me? That’s how Gungnir and I ended up, anyway! Dad’s Aegislash is his mom, and there were a bunch of just hatched ones and he came right up and … uh, tried to stab me. But it didn’t hurt too much! He was just playing… right?”
“Bonding with it!” Cress looks excited then, “I’d wanna be friends with a Pokemon like that… Even if it was scary, you know? I think… Entei is the coolest. From the legends, right? It’s a big fire lion… I’d really want to meet him one day, even if we didn’t get to be friends. But… hmm, one that I could bond with? Definitely Arcanine! Or, a Growlithe I guess. “Uh… sorry, that was really kiddish of me, wasn’t it? Where are you showing this anyway?” He pauses, “wait, what…? Oh…” Cress frowns, getting serious again. “Hurting your friends. Betraying them. That kind of thing… no way, I won’t let anyone do that. That’s the worst thing, in my eyes…” He shakes his head, looking upset. “Pokemon or human or whatever, that’s unforgivable.”

First-Person: Dumb Thread with Arche.
Third-Person:
What do you feel your role in Union is?
“Uhm… huh, I’m not too sure.” Cress scratches his head, obviously a little nervous about this whole “interview” thing. He’s just a simple guy! Why’d they stop him on the street. “I mean, I guess it makes sense that everyone has a place here, right? I’m still kind of young but I think where I’m at is okay… Still, it might not be where I’m at in twenty years! That’s a long time.”
To what lengths would you go to rescue your allies if they were lost in the wilderness?
“I’d do anything!” He puts on a determined face finally, not looking so unsure any longer. “I’m definitely not gonna leave them there. Even if it gets us both into trouble.” Cress shakes his head, “nope, I’ll find them! And… even if we both get lost, at least we’d be together right?” The boy finally grins, “that’s always better than being alone.”
What does the story of the Savior mean to you?
“It’s pretty important right?” He was in the Swords of the Savior, he couldn’t just say it wasn’t, even if he hadn’t joined for that kind of thing. “My mom… haha, she told me those stories all the time growing up, you know? I really liked them. They give our people… hope, I guess? That’s really important. I think they’re true, but I know some people don’t. If they’re right, the story is still important! It keeps us all together.”
What do you look for in the Pokémon with whom you bond?
Cress thinks about this one a moment, his Honedge perking up at the mention and prodding him. “O-ow, hey… I don’t know, I guess. Just whatever one likes me? That’s how Gungnir and I ended up, anyway! Dad’s Aegislash is his mom, and there were a bunch of just hatched ones and he came right up and … uh, tried to stab me. But it didn’t hurt too much! He was just playing… right?”
When encountering a rare and powerful Pokémon, what is most important? Researching it, bonding with it, or defeating it? Why?
“Bonding with it!” Cress looks excited then, “I’d wanna be friends with a Pokemon like that… Even if it was scary, you know? I think… Entei is the coolest. From the legends, right? It’s a big fire lion… I’d really want to meet him one day, even if we didn’t get to be friends. But… hmm, one that I could bond with? Definitely Arcanine! Or, a Growlithe I guess. I’d definitely like that.”
In your eyes, what is absolutely unforgivable.
